This should be in later today if the tracking is correct. I know next to nothing about it but knew I had to have it when I saw it.
I found one on anothe site, http://www.loringpage.com/pens/cat03a.htm but info is scant. All it said was "Mabie Toddtelescoping twist combo, circa 1854, Sterling, fluted case, barleycorn engraved, fluted nozzle,3 3/4" closed, "MABIE'S PATENT OCT.3.1854" It's #149 on the page.
It looks like the original nib went missing & was replaced w/ a llfetime Sheaffer nib.
Does anyone know anything about this beauty? Dennis

i saw it on ebay and thought it was pretty weird. they were calling it a snorkel!!
it's mind boggling, i mean, how does it write if it doesn't have a feed? and the "snorkel", that looks like a pencil point, isn't it? i'm sure you are gonna let us know how this works!!
that site you posted is very interesting. i'll check it out later when i have more time!!
have fun with you new toy and make sure to let us know how it works!!
edited PS. just realised it is a dip pen, isn't it??
I'm always on the look out for interesting goodies that i can later properly release it back into the wild. I snagged this one strictly for resale value. I'm just not a dip oen user at all. I've tried for years & failed every time. Just couldn't get the hang of it.
I can understand how dealer joeX looking in a pen book or at some basic online searches would come up with a snorkel. To the lay person, this is pretty much as alien an object as they come.
"how does it write if it doesn't have a feed" It's a telescoping/retractable dip pen & doesn't use a feed.
I haven't really looked around that one too much. i just found it the other day during a search on info for this beauty.
It's going to be tough to score a new nib for this one me thinks. Anyone going to DC?
Dennis

Shame the two pretty Weavers with out caps don't have them. Top under the black pen and above the two blue caps.
Unexpectedly, I've a collections of Wearevers. Thanks to Dennis, I even have an idea what they are and from what decade or decades. Even got a fake P-51.
I did also get three nifty mix matched Esties, a great blue caped light copper LJ and a vivid blue capped dark copper DJ and a red almost copper capped black transitional...What do you mean they are not variations...they are now. Beats the hell out of silver caps.
I did learn in EBay, if the pen is capped it ain't got a nib...and the Weaver nibs are staying where they are.
Now comes the buying of tools; polish, wax and Demel muslin wheel, or seeing what my mechanic can do for a cap puller. $120 is a lot of beer. Sac's and nibs. Thankfully I live near Peter Bock and can see what I can finagle for nibs and feeds, for both the Esties and the Wearevers...as soon as my money tree finishes growing.
Remember when buying a money tree, get a always buy northern tree...Any one need any Confederate money?

My wife came in my den, with an ad....Pelikan 605 set down from E-249 ($340) to E- 99 or ($137). I was out the door faster than Flash. Only had mediums....the Pen shop near by only had B, and OM....I'm interested in BB, or OBB. So I have to register with Pelikan and am waiting for their return E-mail. one only has 24 hours to register...last time it passed, being busy.
So I'll be asking about if they have any Italic as rumor says. They have oblique, OM, OB, OBB I tried an OB and it was not quite as wide as I wanted.
Other wise I'll swap in my medium for a BB, and send it to a nib master next year. I've a box of pens and parts needing sac's and nibs and who know what, that has to be done first.
Because that big shop...university city...and Germans sill are FP folks, I tried a MB in BB and the nib was scratchy....for that money, a nib should be perfect, or at least smooth.
MB had never been on my list of things to do in my spare time as was.
