I gotta admit I haven't followed anime much since Porco Rosso, Nausicaa, Lupita and and Totoro. Maybe it's time for me to wander back in that direction.
Miyazaki's films are beyond anime. "Howl's Moving Castle" was the last one I saw, and it was amazing. I very much want to see his most recent film, "Ponyo."

never was a anime fan at all. but my kids did get me to watch spirited away. I dug it for the most part. There was some pretty frackin' bizarre shit in there though.

That's definitely one of the odder Miyazakis. You should try "My neighbor Totoro." It's just sweet. If you like airplanes, "Porco Rosso" is a must-see.
Non-Miyazaki ... "Ranma 1/2" will keep you laughing, and "Cowboy Bebop" is very cool. Oh, and "Akira" is classic! Some warped stuff in that one.
"Ranma 1/2" is a long series and several movies; "Cowboy Bebop" is a series and at least one movie; "Totoro," "Porco Rosso," and "Akira" are all movies.
