Starting Of A Pen

Got an old Esterbrook from a customer today that we are building a pen around it for him.

Today I got the section threaded as well as an early Parker converter installed into it.

Yes Brandon, the 2668 nibs are nice, but I can't wait to put a 9xxx or stub into it!
I pitched this idea by appleman back in the summer, but waited till this month to
"Go For It"!

I've never owned any Esterbrooks, been wanting to try my hand at a J pen someday.
Still trying to learn the differences in the nibs, so looks like you guys can be of a big help to me in that department.
Building a pen around an Esterbrook sounds fascinating, especially considering I've been eye-balling a few originals lately.

Inka, the 2668 I have writes about the same width as I get from a wet Pelikan fine nib. I can't quite recall what nibs you have on the 800 or the tortie. The 9--- series is good too, but I'm just as happy with the 2668 I got from "Bruce in Ocala." Next note I send I'll use the Estie so you can see for yourself. They are fine pens, but they run on the slender side and are fairly light.

Frank or Chris, any hints about what comes next in this project? You've really got my curiosity up.

My next step will be to start on the body. If I get a bit of time this am I will be cutting the body down to size.

I like this idea a lot. I suggested it to Brian at Edison Pens a while back, but he was busy on his own projects. I would be interested in a custom pen that used a converter and Esterbrook nibs. Very cool.

Understood. Well, if I ever actually have a Renew Point in hand, I can measure the thing. I have an aversion to making non-reversible changes to things that are no longer made, and would have made a slip-fit adapter for that section instead of threading it, but would love to design pens that the Renew Points would just screw right into. smile.gif

After deciding on a couple of options, this looked best!
The others were friction fit, but it involved sealing that, and using a "blind cap"
to access the converter. Another was using a Cross cartridge that Chris told me fit loosely, but may have been able to use anyway.

My notion was an extension of the section into which the section would be sealed, but which added an external thread for the barrel. Depending upon the diameters involved, this would add either a bit of length or a bit of girth to the pen.

That's a finish that's looking simply gorgeous!
What type of polish did you use to get that high-gloss luster?
Was it a paste, buffing compound, white block of compound on a felt wheel, ...?
