A lot of my life is still packed away in boxes following a cross-country move a few years ago. I decided to go through some of them a while ago to find some knives and sharpening equipment I had stored away. In the process I came across two prized possessions.
First is one of my granddad's Old Timer knives. I never knew him (he died when my mom was still young) and this is one of the few mementos of his that my mom's kids have. It's nothing fancy, just a small stockman, but for all I care it is one of the best knives ever. With a little elbow grease it is cleaning up nice and is taking a good sharp.
Second, and more unexpected, is my old Boy Scout manual. It is a trip to see my old handwriting as an 11-year-old. Yikes! Again, it is nothing fancy, but I'd sure be busted up if something happened to this old ratty manual.
I guess I'm not too much for sentimentality but it was just too cool finding these things. What about you? What are some of your rough-around-the-edges family heirlooms or prized personal possessions?
I moved too many times for much to have survived, the tin plate from the 64-5 Worlds Fair where I worked for two weeks as a Boy Scout, is about all I got from back in the when.
