I have an old Wearever desk set type ballpoint pen. It is black and has WEAREVER U.S.A. imprinted on the barrel, which tapers off towards the top.
It needs a new refill and when I unscrewed the nose cone out came a Papermate skip free ballpoint refill. Is this the same refill as a moden Papermate Lubriglide refill?
Bottom line is, I just want a working refill...don't care what brand. Any help appreciated.
Let's see if I can't get a pic on my photobucket gallary page.
The pic shows the Wearever apart. The refill in the pic is NOT the Papermate that I found in it. I was able to find a Ritepoint refill I had in another pen and it fits. The correct size refill measures 4 1/8 inches. The pen itself measures 6 1/2 inches from top to bottom of nose cone.
I have done some internet searching since you told me you had not seen any Wearever desk BP's before and I have not been able to locate any online.
I ran out to a Dollar Tree store nearby and bought several ballpoints (they dont sell refills there) and thought I would find at least one to fit the Wearver. Boy was I wrong.
The problem is that the diameter of the metal tip on the ones I bought is too large for the hole in the Wearever nosecone. I have posted a Photobucket pic of one that works and one that does not. The one that works (brass one) is a dried out refill from a vintage Ritepoint, The other (white one) is from a generic dollar pen 4/$1 pen. I also found a dried up Papermate Skip Free refill that fits. More moden Papermates are too large.
My digiatal calipers measure the ones that fit to be 1.75mm diameter. The ones that do not fit measure 2.20mm diameter.
I am at a loss as to where I might find one that fits. Any ideas?
I don't know where you are, but the local Office Depot stores here carry a variety of refills and usually have comparison charts to help you match yours with what's available. The majority of modern pens use Parker, Cross, or G2 refill sizes, and the older styles are much harder to come by.
Another option would be to carefully ream out the nose of the pen to accommodate modern refills. I have a National Pen Co. desk ballpoint that needs a small-tip-diameter refill as well, and am considering this approach.
We no longer have Office Depot in Phoenix (not for many years)...just Office Max and Staples, but I have gone through all their stuff and nothing fits...it is that 1.75mm tip that is the problem....anything bigger is not going through the hole in the nosecone.
I think it would be a mistake to ream out the nose cone to accomodate a modern refill. That would drastically reduce the value of what might be a rare and perhaps, highly collectible, Wearever. If Dennis has not seen a Wearever like this, it must be pretty rare.
I have been told that a Schneider Express 75 refill may work as it has a 1.6mm tip diameter. Will have to see if the 3.2mm diameter of the rest of the refill will fit in the upper part of the nosecone. I think it will.
I have ordered some of these and will see how they work.
I am pleased to report that the Schneider Express 75 ball point refills worked perfectly in my Wearever Desk Set pen.
Since I started my search for a refill for it a few weeks ago, I came across another desk set ballpoint that I believe was made by Wearever. This one is blue and an advertiser for the Hotel Roosevelt in Portland Oregon. Also imprinted on the barrel is the number 814. I am thinking that this pen was a sales sample and that is the model or stock number for this pen.
There is a slight difference between the two. The blue one has a very different refill, with the nose cone built in. It is a squat flexible plastic refill. It will fit in the black one but the Schneider Express 75 will not fit in the blue one with the Roosevelt imprint. It could be made to fit as the only issue with it fitting is that it is too long. That is easily fixed. The nose cone screws on perfectly.
What I am wondering now is whether either of these pens are as they came from the factory?
The pen body's are the exact same length as is the shape on the outside. Obviously they have a little different inside as the Schneider will not fit in the blue one.
I am posting a pic on photobucket which includes the little plastic refill.
In a related vein, I just picked this set up on eBay:
The pencil is damaged internally beyond repair, but the pen is in excellent condition apart from a non-working refill. As with Halfhyde's pen, the tips of most available refills won't fit through the tip of the barrel, and in this case all those I've tried have been about 1/2" too short as well. I'll have to try one of the "universal" refills for old pens from Fisher and see what happens there.
I really like the pushbutton advance mechanism on this pen, and would love to be able to use it!
Thanks, Frank. I'm hoping DWL will chime in and tell me whether this model has a name or number; I haven't been able to find any photos of anything quite like it. The pen click mechanism is a push-to-advance, then push-harder-to-release, two-stage thing made from machined brass!
As you guys know I have seen and owned literally multiple thousands of Wearever pens of all types, but I have to admit I have never seen this set in any ad, form or variant. I LOVE the 50's space age styling & think it's a balls out cool as hell set. Try and track down Joe nemecheck (bad spelling on the last name) IIRC he hangs out at Pentrace sometimes. He may be able to help with the pencil repair.
I have to ask, what did you give for the set?
Sweet score man.

It *looks* like the set was never used, apart from the pencil having been jammed, possibly dropped hard on its butt. Today I received another Wearever ballpoint, a pretty green anodized aluminum thing, as a bonus from Halfhyde. I just ordered a few of the Fisher SPS series refills that I know fit these pens.
The non-pressurized "1-For-All" refills also fit if you can find them, usually for only a buck or two; the SPS refills are pressurized and $6 each from Fisher.
I received the Fisher SPS refills today, one each of blue, black, fine, and medium (four in all) and they do fit the green anodized Wearever. The pen in the P&P set, however, needs a refill that's about 1/2" longer. I can probably fit a piece of plastic tubing around the end of the refill to join it to another piece of rigid tubing to make up the difference.
Now I need to find refills that will fit an Eversharp Kimberly ballpoint, or possibly go the same route to extend the Fisher refills ...
Found some Fisher SO series "1-For-All" refills, the kind that are made to break off at various lengths. *Almost* perfect for the pen in the set (that turned out to be a ca. 1954 "Slimstyle" set), and the addition of a short slice of lollipop stick (don't judge me) in the clicker mechanism resulted in a perfect fit. A similar mod allowed one to fit the Eversharp Kimberly as well.
Now I need a refill for an as-yet-unidentified Waterman's ballpoint that has a *very* long spring that pushed against a lip at the butt end of the refill (the pen arrived with a cut-off plastic refill that did nothing whatsoever). A little research says that this abandoned style of refill can be replaced with a refill for a "Must de Cartier" ballpoint at $10-13 a pop. I should have on in a day or two. This pen has a clever clicker mechanism very similar to that in the Wearever Slimstyle, though the two are otherwise quite different.
The Must de Cartier refill worked perfectly, but now I'm gonna need two more:

... and a nice shirt and tie.
The pen appears to be an early 1950s "Sapphire" and I *might* have found another one in better condition. If I get myself a tubing flaring tool and some nice Monteverde refills for Cross pens, I can refill these pretty economically.
