Let's see if I can't get a pic on my photobucket gallary page.

The pic shows the Wearever apart. The refill in the pic is NOT the Papermate that I found in it. I was able to find a Ritepoint refill I had in another pen and it fits. The correct size refill measures 4 1/8 inches. The pen itself measures 6 1/2 inches from top to bottom of nose cone.

I have done some internet searching since you told me you had not seen any Wearever desk BP's before and I have not been able to locate any online.

I ran out to a Dollar Tree store nearby and bought several ballpoints (they dont sell refills there) and thought I would find at least one to fit the Wearver. Boy was I wrong.

The problem is that the diameter of the metal tip on the ones I bought is too large for the hole in the Wearever nosecone. I have posted a Photobucket pic of one that works and one that does not. The one that works (brass one) is a dried out refill from a vintage Ritepoint, The other (white one) is from a generic dollar pen  4/$1 pen. I also found a dried up Papermate Skip Free refill that fits. More moden Papermates are too large.

My digiatal calipers measure the ones that fit to be 1.75mm diameter. The ones that do not fit measure 2.20mm diameter.

I am at a loss as to where I might find one that fits. Any ideas?

We no longer have Office Depot in Phoenix (not for many years)...just Office Max and Staples, but I have gone through all their stuff and nothing fits...it is that 1.75mm tip that is the problem....anything bigger is not going through the hole in the nosecone.

I think it would be a mistake to ream out the nose cone to accomodate a modern refill. That would drastically reduce the value of what might be a rare and perhaps, highly collectible, Wearever. If Dennis has not seen a Wearever like this, it must be pretty rare.

I have been told that a Schneider Express 75 refill may work as it has a 1.6mm tip diameter. Will have to see if the 3.2mm diameter of the rest of the refill will fit in the upper part of the nosecone. I think it will.

I have ordered some of these and will see how they work.

In a related vein, I just picked this set up on eBay:

The pencil is damaged internally beyond repair, but the pen is in excellent condition apart from a non-working refill. As with Halfhyde's pen, the tips of most available refills won't fit through the tip of the barrel, and in this case all those I've tried have been about 1/2" too short as well. I'll have to try one of the "universal" refills for old pens from Fisher and see what happens there.

I really like the pushbutton advance mechanism on this pen, and would love to be able to use it!

Thanks, Frank. I'm hoping DWL will chime in and tell me whether this model has a name or number; I haven't been able to find any photos of anything quite like it. The pen click mechanism is a push-to-advance, then push-harder-to-release, two-stage thing made from machined brass!

It *looks* like the set was never used, apart from the pencil having been jammed, possibly dropped hard on its butt. Today I received another Wearever ballpoint, a pretty green anodized aluminum thing, as a bonus from Halfhyde. I just ordered a few of the Fisher SPS series refills that I know fit these pens.

The non-pressurized "1-For-All" refills also fit if you can find them, usually for only a buck or two; the SPS refills are pressurized and $6 each from Fisher.

Found some Fisher SO series "1-For-All" refills, the kind that are made to break off at various lengths. *Almost* perfect for the pen in the set (that turned out to be a ca. 1954 "Slimstyle" set), and the addition of a short slice of lollipop stick (don't judge me) in the clicker mechanism resulted in a perfect fit. A similar mod allowed one to fit the Eversharp Kimberly as well.

Now I need a refill for an as-yet-unidentified Waterman's ballpoint that has a *very* long spring that pushed against a lip at the butt end of the refill (the pen arrived with a cut-off plastic refill that did nothing whatsoever). A little research says that this abandoned style of refill can be replaced with a refill for a "Must de Cartier" ballpoint at $10-13 a pop. I should have on in a day or two. This pen has a clever clicker mechanism very similar to that in the Wearever Slimstyle, though the two are otherwise quite different.

I'm having way too much fun.
