Mabie Todd Telescoping dip pen question
Permalink Closed

I own a 14K gold Mabie Todd & Co telescoping dip pen. It appears to be in really great condition & the telescoping action still works well. The tip appears to be in great condition too.

I was tempted to sell it for scrap if it was truly 14K.

I can't help wondering if it might be better off in a collector's hands.

It is 2 and 3/8 inches closed & almost 3 & 1/8 inches open.

I've tried to find more about this one pen but never came across one like this. Anyone have any info that might help me as to whether I should scrap it or sell it?

The point is in perfect condition. I just have bad photography skills.

You should contact David Moak at info@mabie-todd.com. He'll be able to tell you all about it. One thing. I dont believe this is a dip pen, but rather an ink scraper. Basically a very old style of 'eraser'. From what I can see in the pics the 'tip' isn't interchangeable as a dip pen nib would be. Nor is the 'tip' a nib at all.

Unless it is stamped/hallmarked as solid gold, it's not. More than likely it is gold filled.

Thank you very much for the contact. It makes a lot of sense to me. It does say 14K in the second photo but who knows.

It's pretty & neat but I'm at the point where I'm cleaning house and "everything must go".

Thanks again.

Turns out it is a 14K gold toothpick. My mother always told me her grandfather was very "well off". I might just have to keep it now.

A toothpick? Thats is so very cool.

Honestly, if it is a family piece, save it and pas it along someday to someone who will appreciate it properly.
