As some of you are aware, I am something of a beer enthusiast *and* a beer snob. I like the interesting, the exotic, the unusual beers; the ones you won't usually find at your local supermarket or 7-11 store.

Today I was lucky enough to stumble upon a beer I was not expecting to find outside the brewer's own store, or one local liquor store that stocks an amazing variety of beers, and did so in a small, local-chain market.

The beer is Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout, a collaboration between Greg Koch (CEO of Stone Brewing right here in Escondido), Drew Curtis of the news aggregator site, Fark.com, and actor Wil Wheaton, geek extraordinaire. It's called "Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout," and is the reason this post has taken (so far) five minutes and many corrections to type. The bottle describes it as "Ale brewed with pecans, wheat, and rye, with one quarter aged in bourbon barrels."

It's also 13% alcohol (I did the math: 22 oz x 13% = 2.86 oz (100%/200 proof) / .45 (90 proof) = 6.35+ shots).

At first, one can taste mainly the malt. Then the rye and wheat appear. Then the alcohol starts to kick in and who really cares anymore?

I recommend this beer for it's amazing flavor. I recommend that one *share* this beer in order not to become so thoroughly buzzed as to no longer be able to describe it coherently.

Alas, it's in limited release; if you can find it where you are, grab it before it gets away!

There is an "Iron Hill Brewery" opening up in my area, which I'm pretty psyched about!
On the mainstream side, I drink "Yuengling Lager"- Local, Amber color, and decent body!

It's okay, Frank; I won't mock you for drinking lager. <G>

Yeah, 13% was a bit much; I was well buzzed less than halfway through, and that was after a full meal. I'd like the beer better at about half that. My favorite is Stone's Smoked Porter, which is about 5.3% as I recall.

I find it hard to believe that a 13% beer can really taste that great? I've heard of a 40% beer brewed over here in the UK by Brew Dog, all I could think about was how horrible it must taste!

Jon, You couldn't really taste the alcohol, but you could sure feel it!

In related news, "Indra Kulindra" from Ballast Point is incredible. They call it an "Indian-style Export Stout" and it's made with curry spices, among other things.

Another recent Stone Brewing special was "Xocoveza" (www.stonebrewing.com/collab/xocoveza/). Freaking delicious!

Right now I'm having a Dogfish Head "Indian Brown Ale" which is also quite nice, and much less "extreme" than the "w00tstout."
