HisNibs.com update -- New videos February 20th, 2008
I'm amazed to discover that it's been a month since our last update (hold down the applause please). Sandwiched in the middle of that was the Philly Pen Show at the end of January, and this update refers back to that in many ways.
I'd say that for us the Delta Israel 60th anniversary http://www.hisnibs.com/israel_60th.htm, the Monteverde MEGA (particularly the new white & gold version http://www.hisnibs.com/mega_white.htm, and the Pilot 78Gs http://www.hisnibs.com/pilot_pens.htm were the biggest sellers among pens. Lai Yee's pen rolls http://www.hisnibs.com/pen_rolls.htm are always a big hit at shows.
Our table for the three-day event was between that of Maryann and Steve Zucker of Empire Pens - the subject of a previous video interview here http://tinyurl.com/25gd6h - and Joe Nemecek and his incredible collection and display of Victorian pencils!
I also had the chance to sit down with Rick Conner of Penspotters for a video interview toward the end of the show.
Up on the homepage, along with Rick's interview, is the first of a planned series of short videos on fountain pen filling mechanisms. These are geared more to the newbie than to those of you on this list, but you might want to take a quick look anyway. First up is a piston cartridge-converter pen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joe Nemecek's Victorian Pencils
At the recent Philadelphia Pen Show, Teresa and I had our table next to Joe during the show. Normally, Joe is walking endless circuits of a show, visiting old friends and new, picking up the occasional pen -- or more likely pencil -- for his collection.
This time, he decided to remain stationary and display his magnificent collection of pencil holders...largely of Victorian vintage. Nothing was for sale. He just wanted to share with show attendees...and his table soon became one of the tables to spend time at, oohing and aahing. His Nibs' table benefited from the overflow.
The few photos that I took which were actually somewhat in focus (it wasn't easy, trying to bend over his display cases in less-than-optimal light, trying to hold my outstretched arms steady) will just give you a little idea of what he brought. I've urged him to set up a similar display at home, so that a professional photographer can do this magnificent collection justice.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Interview with Rick Conner of Penspotters
I learned of Rick quite a few years before starting His Nibs a decade ago. I was a fountain pen collector ravenous for as much information as I could find. One of the first -- and best -- informational sites that I discovered on the Internet was Rick's Penoply http://www.rickconner.net/penoply/index.html (this link takes you to a remnant of that old site).
Rick and I met for the first time at a pen show many years ago -- where he was to be found lending a hand at the Pendemonium table -- and he subsequently became a customer of many of my pens from China -- and more importantly, a friend.
Rick has since added to his newer website, Penspotters http://www.rickconner.net/penspotters/index.html, by enfolding much of the information from the old Penoply, and adding more (though you're falling behind Rick!).

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On the blog...The Tales of Beedle the Bard
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books (in case you haven't heard), handwrote and illustrated seven copies of The Tales of Beedle the Bard, a children's book which she mentioned in the last book of the Potter series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
The first six copies were given to individuals who helped Rowling during the many years spent writing the Potter books. The seventh copy was put up for auction to raise money for The Children's Voice campaign, a charity she co-founded to help improve the lives of institutionalized children across Europe.
Amazon.com ended up winning the auction for the purchase price was £1,950,000.
