I recently purchased a 51 Special for a reasonable price, mostly out of curiosity and without expectation that it would be in fantastic condition.
The pen is leaking ink through the nib, i.e. everytime I remove the cap the hood is smothered in ink. I haven't tried to fill it, this is just the ink that was in the pen when I got it.
I wanted to pull it apart and see if I could clean it up a bit to get the ink flow working, but I can't seem to get the hood off. I applied heat and tried to twist it off in the same way I did for my regular aerometric Parker 51, but the hood simply won't budge.
Should the regular technique of heat application and gentle twisting with a rubber grip work on a 51 Special? I'm wondering if perhaps a previous owner has sealed the threads with some other adhesive that's not gonna become pliable with a bit of heat.
Also, is the 51 Special the same under the hood as a regular 51 (I mean with a finned collector, breather tubue and everything)?

Yup.

It could be that or old ink build up. have you tried soaking the pen in some 1/10 amonia water solution for an hour or so? An ultrasonic cleaner would be an even better choice.

Yup
