Great news for those who need to use Medical Marijuana in the 13 'legal' states
Permalink Closed

This is directly from am email update I get from the Marijuana Policy Project.

This is excellent news for those in the 13 states who at the state level allow the use of medical marijuana (MMJ). It's still a no no on the federal level, but it appears that things are starting to loosen up some. If your not familiar with the topic or want to learn more go to the home page MPP.org. This is IMHO the first serious group trying to help others & not a bunch of pot heads (like the clowns at NORML) out dorking around making noise but getting very little accomplished.

I truly hope that someday very soon these draconian laws will be repealed and marijuana will be legal/taxed and regulated. Taking the $$ from the drug cartels, freeing up billions of dollars of law enforcement dollars and manpower. Not to mention the massive cash infusion it will give this country and hundreds of thousands of jobs it will create.

Lifting the prohibition is a win win for this country, sick folk can get the meds that help then maintain a quality of life as well as the above mentioned economic gains for the good ole' USA.

Dear Dennis Lively,

Ready for some great news?

The Obama administration is directing federal prosecutors not to arrest medical marijuana patients and caregivers who are complying with state laws.

On Monday, federal prosecutors, as well as top officials at the FBI and DEA, will reportedly be told that it isn’t a good use of their time to arrest people who use or provide medical marijuana, if they are complying with state law.

This is the most significant, positive policy development on the federal level for medical marijuana since 1978.

Under the Bush administration, the feds had continued to raid, arrest, and otherwise terrorize medical marijuana and their caregivers in the 13 states that have passed medical marijuana laws. This new policy is a major change.

MPP was instrumental in obtaining a promise from President Obama during the presidential campaign that, if elected, he would halt these arrests. MPP was the only reform organization to testify on Capitol Hill urging the issuance of the guidelines and, later, was the only group to work with leaders in Congress to get a House committee to urge the administration to adopt the written guidelines. Our lobbyists have also been in contact with top officials at the Justice Department about the guidelines.

(In fact, you can watch a one-minute video clip of Obama responding to one of our campaign volunteers in New Hampshire on August 21, 2007, in the heat of the presidential primary campaign here, and a clip of MPP's lobbyist following his testimony on the Hill here.)

We're thrilled to see this promise come to fruition, and I hope you’ll join me in celebrating this news -- some of the best we’ve had for medical marijuana patients in years.

Thank you for helping to make this momentous change happen. And if you’d like to help keep pushing, please:

1. Use MPP's easy online action center to tell your members of Congress that you support this new policy.

2. Donate to MPP’s federal lobbying work here.

Sincerely,

Rob Kampia

Personally I don't feel meth has many medicinal qualities. Ganja brownies vs. meth cupcakes...hmmm..lol.

I'd like to see an end to this prohibition. It's founded and based on racism, greed and unfounded cultural fears. Need i also mention I am a fierce believer in your freedom to choose to do anything you wish in that it harm no other person.

While white castle is tasty in the proper time and place, i much preferred orange or grape icy pops.

VICTORY! Congress lifts ban on Washington, D.C.'s medical marijuana law

Marijuana Policy Project Alert December 13, 2009

Dear Dennis Lively:

The great news just keeps coming in.

Minutes ago, Congress voted to finally lift the 11-year ban on Washington, D.C.’s medical marijuana law.

The House voted 221-202 and the Senate voted 57-35 to approve the measure.

For the last 11 years, under a provision known as the Barr amendment, Congress has prevented Washington, D.C. from implementing the medical marijuana law passed by 69% of voters in 1998.

Repealing this amendment has been a primary focus of MPP's federal lobbying efforts for many years. In 2007, we even hired former Congressman Bob Barr (R-Ga.) — the original author of the amendment — to lobby to overturn it. And our lobbyists have worked directly with members of the House and Senate and their staff since 2006 to eliminate this democracy-unfriendly law.

In fact, senior appropriators in Congress sought out MPP staff to work through specifics and to help better understand D.C.'s medical marijuana law and the complicated legal maneuverings that led to the blocking of its implementation.

MPP would like to thank Congressmen Jose Serrano (D-N.Y.), Dave Obey (D-Wis.), Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) for their strong and abiding support of allowing D.C. to implement its medical marijuana law.

I also want to thank MPP's 29,000 dues-paying members, whose support helped to make this win possible. If you'd like to see more of these kinds of successes, I hope you'll donate to MPP's federal lobbying efforts. We're turning supporters' donations into results, and we can't do it without you.

Today's vote represents a victory not just for medical marijuana patients, but for all Americans, who have the right to determine their own policies without federal meddling. We'll be celebrating this victory in D.C. at our anniversary gala on January 13, and I hope you'll join us.

Sincerely,

null

MEDICAL MARIJUANA BILL FILED WITH BI-PARTISAN SPONSORSHIP

A bill to permit Missouri citizens whose doctors believe they benefit from the use of marijuana as medicine to do so without fear of criminal prosecution and imprisonment has been filed by Representative Kate Meiners of Kansas City. The bill has more sponsors than ever before, with 16 House members signing onto the bill, including Republican Representative Robert Schaaf, a physician from St. Joseph.

Fourteen states and the District of Columbia now have laws which permit patients to use marijuana as medicine with the approval of their doctors. Just this week, New Jersey’s legislature passed such a bill and the Governor has announced his intention to sign it. A few weeks ago, Congress voted to allow the D.C. Medical Marijuana Initiative to take effect there.

In past years, when the bill had only Democratic sponsorship, House Speaker Ron Richard failed to assign the bill to a committee. With the bipartisan sponsorship the bill now has, it is hoped that the Speaker will assign the bill to a committee promptly and allow it an opportunity to be heard.

Similar legislation is pending in many other state legislatures across the country. The Illinois Senate passed a medical marijuana bill last year and it is now pending before the House in that state.

A few months ago, the American Medical Association (AMA) reversed its longstanding opposition to the use of marijuana as medicine. The AMA now supports allowing marijuana to be prescribed and acknowledges that it has proven medical use. Medical marijuana legislation is also supported by the American College of Physicians, American Nurses Association and dozens of other major professional and health-related
organizations.

House Bill 1670 would place the issue before Missouri voters in November of 2011. In 1994, the Missouri Senate passed SCR 14 which called on Congress to make marijuana available for medical use. Under current Missouri law, doctors are allowed to prescribe cocaine, opium, methamphetamine and hundreds of other potentially dangerous addictive drugs. Supporters of the bill say it is absurd to not trust those same doctors with the ability to authorize their patients to also use a relatively safe and non-addictive substance like cannabis. Polls have strong majority support for the measure among Missouri voters.
