Larry Mensch is a Master Bladesmith from Pennsylvania. He is well known for some of the deepest polish finishes as well as absolute perfect balance and hand fit on his grips. Here is Mensch set, a Bowie and Camp knife.
Truly a high polish, something I rarely see. Reminds me, I've been needing some more green Knifemakers' rouge for polishing, maybe some gray diamond-grit rouge too. It's interesting how so many custom knives I've been seeing have those tiny decorative cuts along the blade spines, seeing as I did something very similar to my old knives many years ago.

The file work does several things. First, of course is that it is beautiful, but in addition it added a gripping surface for additional control when you do precise cuts.
That's why I'd cut the spines on my blades, to give my index fingers and/or thumbs a slip-resistant surface for fine detailing. I have those old knives stored away deeply in too many boxes to know which one they're in, or I'd post some pics of the cuts I'd made on some very old carbon steel blades.
