Best ink for Watercolor

Hi all. I have recently purchased a Lamy Safari and
a bottle of Noodler's Eel Black. I really like it however
I have to wait at least 20 hours before I can do any
watercolor with it (not that I do much but I am starting).
So my question is: what have you found to be the best
ink for watercolors? I have to buy a new bottle of the
Eel ink as I broke the one I just bought so I thought
I would ask here to see if there was something better.

Also, I wanted to mention that I have a set of Pilot
Varsity disposable fountain pens (oh the horror I hear
some of you say). I like them very much but the ink
could dry for a year and still run as soon as I put
watercolor to it.

Edit: I forgot to mention that my Lamy is an Extra Fine
Nib if that makes any difference.

Are you talking about doing pen & ink drawings with watercolor washes? If that 's the case then pretty much you need to look to india inks/ shellac based rather than FP inks which are water solubule. There are some Noodler inks that will leave black/ grey behind but will also run under water.

I have pretty much abandoned the idea of using a FP with my watercolors. The PITT pens work so much better.

No question there.  Dip pens with india ink can give nice lines but more than that you've got to step up to something meant for it.


Speaking from mixed media experience it really is important what goes on first!
