HisNibs.com update -- Prima and Crocodiles
April 23rd, 2010

Greetings everyone,

Two new series of pens are introduced in this
newsletter,
as well as an addition to an established line.

First up is Monteverde's newest...the Prima.
It's an apt
name, as far as I'm concerned, as one has
been in my
shirt pocket and seen constant use for close
to a month
now!

I've collected some models of Crocodile pens
from China
over the years, but their new focus in
designing pens with
the western world in mind, convinced me to start
importing them. First up...a tooled leather
model.

A new finish -- which I'm calling 'Ash' --
joins the Jinhao
IChing lineup of fountain pens.

The now-venerable Pilot 78G is once again
re-stocked in
all colors, all nib sizes and all flavors
(ok, I made up that
last part).

Monteverde Prima

I'm not sure where to begin with Monteverde's
latest
pen design, the Prima. Perhaps it's
sufficient to say
that with many hundreds of fountain pens to
choose
from here at the Palace, His Nibs' Brown
Stripe (which
actually reminds me of the Pelikan Tortoise in
appearance -- although each pen is unique)
has been
a constant in my shirt pocket since I began
testing it
close to a month ago. That's a long time for
any model
to take 'pride of place'. I even use the
black ballpoint
regularly!!!!

As with the Titanium Invincia introduced in
the last
newsletter, as I write this the small initial
order of
pens I received have almost sold out, just
through word of mouth. Consequently, I'll be
placing a larger order at the beginning of
the week. So
if you're too late in snagging one
of the ones still in stock, fear not, as the
wait for your pen will be short (be it
fountain pen,
rollerball or ballpoint) as it will reach me
within
a week of re-ordering.

When ordering (mailto:orders@hisnibs.com) a
fountain pen, please specify nib size as
well. Note: I've found that the new, large
Monteverde nibs run about a size smaller than
typical western nibs. Hence, I'd classify the
B nib as a typical medium, the M as a fine
and the F as an x-fine.

Crocodile Tooled Leather

Crocodile of China has been producing pens
since 1952, and when I saw some of their
latest designs, such as this tooled leather
model, I had to start importing the line.

They are full-sized pens, measuring 5-1/2"
capped, 6-1/2" posted and 4-7/8" with cap
held aside. I prefer not to post these pens.
They're large enough unposted to write
comfortably, and I think there's some danger
of the leather wearing at the barrel end from
constantly rubbing up against the plastic
inner cap, as well as the fact that these
pens are brass underneath the tooled leather
-- and I find the balance to be slightly top
heavy with the cap posted. YMMV (Your Mileage
May Vary).

Jinhao IChing in Ash

Here's a pen design that clearly embodies its
Chinese heritage! A full-sized pen at 5-3/8"
capped and 6-1/4" posted, this brass-bodied
beauty has a nice heft to it, but is
well-balanced for extended writing sessions
with or without its cap posted.

Now, the Gold and Silver-colored models are
joined by a shade I'm calling Ash.

Pilot 78G back in full force!

What more can I say about this great little
pen that my customers haven't already said on
it's webpage? I guess all I can say is "I
agree!".

On the blog...My new favorite movie quote

A quote from the movie 'Duplicity', spoken by
Paul Giamatti as the character Richard
Garsik: "Who writes with a fountain pen? How
friggin' pretentious is that?"

Also several pen-related posts (although many
more are to be found on my His Nibs' Facebook
page, which is exclusively about pens) and a
really spectacular photo of the eruption of
Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano, which
caused so much havoc this past week to
Europe's air travel.
