It is mostly made by stretching damp leather over a wooden or paper machie mold, the leather is then inserting into very hot boiling water until it shrinks, thickens, and hardens, sometimes mixed with beeswax to serve as a hardener. The name means Boiled Leather or Boiled Hide. These were made as early as the 17th Century and as late as 1880's in England. They were made to be safely carried in a tunic, vest or travel case. If you ever see some very old feather quills buy them and cut the tops down to fit into the case to complete the kit. Mostly made in UK and France, never saw one attributed to Americana maker.
