HisNibs.com update -- Pen rolls, Jinhao, Picasso and nibs

Greetings,

Lai Yee has found a gorgeous new material for her pen rolls, that I'm
calling Deco Lights.

We introduce two new models. From Jinhao, the Purple Celluloid. From
Picasso, the Peace Dove.

The two new Crocodile models introduced in the last newsletter, the Big Croc
Clip
http://www.hisnibs.com/big_croc_clip.htm
and the Leather Torpedo http://www.hisnibs.com/leather_torpedo.htm
have been big sales hits. I still have a few of each as I write this.

As mentioned in the last newsletter, the large Monteverde
http://www.hisnibs.com/monteverde.htm and
Conklin http://www.hisnibs.com/conklin_pens.htm nibs -- including the
stub -- will fit those Jinhao models
that also come with large nibs, such as Desert Sands
http://www.hisnibs.com/desert_sands.htm,
Dragon's Offspring http://www.hisnibs.com/dragon_offspring.htm, Black
Dreadnaught http://www.hisnibs.com/dreadnaught.htm,
Ivory http://www.hisnibs.com/ivory.htm, Pearl Windows
http://www.hisnibs.com/pearl_windows.htm,
Plasma http://www.hisnibs.com/Plasma.htm, Silver Chain Dragon
http://www.hisnibs.com/silver_chain.htm,
Snakeskin http://www.hisnibs.com/snakeskin.htm, Starry Night
http://www.hisnibs.com/starry_night.htm,
Tiger Overlay http://www.hisnibs.com/tiger_overlay.htm, White Spatter
http://www.hisnibs.com/white_spatter.htm and
Wooden Chariot http://www.hisnibs.com/wooden_chariot.htm.

So, if you don't mind mixing companies , then you have a range of nib
sizes -- as well as colors of silver or black -- to match-up with your new
or already purchased Jinhao pens. The nibs are $24.00 each sold separately,
or $20.00 if you'd like me to fit one on to replace the Jinhao nib on a new
purchase.

I've added photos from a couple of Jinhao models below, to show how the pens
look with black Monteverde nibs.

As this newsletter goes out to a mailing list of thousands of customers,

Deco Lights pen roll

More conservative than many of the other pen roll patterns, I was stumped
for a bit as to an appropriate name. After staring for awhile, I was
reminded the image of the top of the Chrysler building in New York City.
Hence, Deco Lights.

The pen roll shown is the 8-pen version, but this material can also be used
to make the 4-pen or 2-pen.

Jinhao Purple Celluloid

I found it difficult to capture the true beauty of this pen's material in a
photograph. It's a combination of pearlescent purples and gray/white.

It's a mid-size pen (although full-sized if posted), measuring 5-1/4"
capped, 6-3/8" posted and 4-3/4" with cap held aside. It's overall design is
reminiscent of the Parker Duofold International, for those of you familiar
with that pen.

Picasso Peace Dove

Here's a pair of lacquer-over-metal pens, that are nevertheless lightweight
enough for extended writing sessions. Measuring 5-1/2" capped, 6-1/4" posted
and 4-3/4" with cap held aside, that would make them mid-sized pens in the
current over-sized environment (reflected in modern fountain pens and my
waistline).

Beyond the obvious difference between the two colors of barrel and cap, they
are further distinguished by color treatment of their 'furniture'...i.e.,
the Mint has silver tones in its clip, cap band, barrel jewel, section and
nib. The Sunrise is all done with gold tones.

Crocodile Big Croc Clip

Here's a pen that will tend to get noticed when it's clipped to your shirt
pocket! Crocodile hasn't been bashful in displaying its company logo in this
full-sized fountain pen. It measures 5-1/2" capped, 6" posted and 4-5/8"
with cap held aside.

Removing the slip cap -- which re-seats with a secure snap -- displays the
nib treatment...which is what initially drew me to this design. The nib
presents itself as being semi-hooded, with a false breather-hole and slit
rendered in the upper design, while the real breather-hole and slit can be
seen through it upon the nib below. It's a very interesting look I think.

Crocodile Leather Torpedo

The leather tooling is quite intricate and detailed, with the barrel chock
full of gamboling crocodiles in various poses!

Each side of the cap is embossed with 'Crocodile', 'Since 1952' and a larger
member of the Crocodyidae family standing guard. Although leather, I do not
believe that it's crocodile skin. I'll update this page if my sources in
China are able to tell me more. 'Crocodile' is engraved both on the clip and
on the ring above it.

Monteverde & Conklin nibs fit selected Jinhao models

The large nibs that many of the Jinhao models sport are terrific in their
own right. But, like the Ford Model-T, you can get them in any line
width...as long as it's medium!

You now have an option -- whether ordering with a new Jinhao pen, or for a
favorite that's already in your rotation. Both the Monteverde and Conklin
nibs will fit.

As the silver Monteverde or Conklin nibs will look very similar to the
Jinhao, here's a photo of the Jinhao Snakeskin
with a black Monteverde nib, and the Desert Sands...

As I say on the website...the nibs are available in B, M, F or the new stub
sizes (for Monteverde...Conklin no longer offers the 'B' nib). I've found
that the Monteverde and Conklin nibs run about a size smaller than typical
western nibs. Hence, I'd classify the B nib as a typical medium, the M as a
fine and the F as an x-fine. The stub is a 1.1 mm medium. Please specify the
nib size you'd like, by letter or 'stub' only, to avoid confusion when
ordering.

Again, these nibs are $24.00 each. You just need to pull out the nib on your
Jinhao pen (or I can do it for you if we're sending a new one), and slide
the new nib in its place.

The Conklin stub nib is monotone -- as shown here -- while the F and M are
two-toned.

If you weren't already sick watching and hearing about the 'performance'
last week by Miley Cyrus, then consider how the crew of the USS Enterprise
felt!
